Lost Registration

Lost your vehicle registration card, sticker, or renewal notice? We issue duplicates on the spot at our Oakdale office, usually in under ten minutes.

Don't drive without your registration.

A missing or lost registration isn't just an inconvenience, it's a citation waiting to happen. California Vehicle Code 4454 requires the current registration card to be kept in the vehicle at all times, and officers routinely ask for it during traffic stops. Beyond that, many everyday situations require the registration: selling the car, transferring ownership, registering for permit parking, filing an insurance claim after a collision, or proving residency for certain state programs.

The fix is simple and fast. Walk into our Oakdale office with your ID and the license plate number, and we'll pull up the record and print a duplicate registration card on the spot. Most lost-registration transactions take under ten minutes. If the year sticker is also missing from the plate, we issue a replacement current-year sticker in the same visit.

What "lost registration" actually means

The term covers several distinct situations that have slightly different paperwork paths. The most common is a lost paper registration card, the document you keep in the glovebox. Replacement is quick and costs a small fee. The second most common is a missing year sticker from the license plate itself; this requires a REG 156 form and a slightly higher fee. Third is the missing renewal notice, the yellow envelope the DMV mails out annually, these don't technically need to be replaced; we can pull up your record without one and process the renewal directly.

Less common but still routine: a lost title (pink slip), which is handled through a REG 227 Application for Duplicate or Paperless Title; and a lost disabled person parking placard, which uses a REG 195 form. We handle all of these under one roof.

When the registered owner can't come in

California requires the registered owner's signature for most replacement transactions. If the owner can't come in (traveling, hospitalized, elderly parent at home, active military deployment), there are a few legitimate paths. A signed power of attorney authorizing a specific person to handle DMV matters on the owner's behalf works well for ongoing situations. A REG 260 Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment form works for one-off transactions on a specific vehicle. We can provide blank forms and help walk through which approach fits your situation; bring the owner's ID and your own ID when you come in.

For vehicles where the registered owner has passed away, the process depends on whether the estate is going through probate. Vehicles held in a trust transfer based on the trust's successor-trustee provisions. Vehicles held individually can often transfer using a REG 5 Affidavit for Transfer Without Probate if the estate qualifies (generally under $184,500 in non-real-estate assets). We see this situation regularly and know which form fits which circumstance.

What to do if your registration was stolen

Stolen registration documents can be used in identity-theft schemes, so California treats stolen registrations more seriously than lost ones. File a police report first with Oakdale PD, the Stanislaus County Sheriff, or whichever agency covers the location where the theft occurred. Bring us the report number, your ID, and your plate number, and we'll issue replacements with a note in the DMV record that old documents shouldn't be honored. If plates were stolen along with the documents, we recommend new plate numbers (additional fee) so the thief can't continue using yours.

Combining lost registration with other DMV work

Because we can process multiple transactions in a single visit, it often makes sense to combine a duplicate-registration request with other paperwork. If you lost your card because it was sitting in a glovebox that got stolen along with the title, we can file both replacements in the same visit. If you're replacing the registration because you also need to update the address on file, we update the address in the DMV system at the same time (no separate trip needed). If your tags are expired and you're also missing the card, we do the renewal and issue a new card in one transaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a duplicate registration?

About ten minutes at our counter. You walk out with the printed card and, if needed, a new current-year sticker.

Do I need to be the registered owner to get a duplicate?

Yes, unless you have a valid power of attorney or signed REG 260 from the owner. Banks, lienholders, dealers, and legal representatives each have their own authorized paths.

Can I print my own registration online?

California does offer a DMV Online Services portal where you can print a replacement, but only if your account is fully set up and you have the vehicle linked. Most customers find it faster to walk in with us, no account setup, no technical troubleshooting, no waiting for the PDF to load.

I lost my renewal notice, can I still renew?

Absolutely. The notice is a convenience, not a requirement. Just bring your plate number and ID; we pull up your record directly and process the renewal the same as if you had the notice in hand.

Does a duplicate registration count as the real thing?

Yes, the duplicate card is the official document. The DMV replaces the old card in the system so any prior card stops being valid. Officers, insurance companies, and other agencies accept the duplicate without distinction.

Ready to get started?

Walk in any time during business hours, no appointment needed, or call (209) 248-0100. Most lost registration transactions complete in under 15 minutes.
